On September 30, 2023, the Foundation hosted the first annual Woody Williams Legacy of Service Celebration. This special event celebrated the life and mission of its namesake, medal of honor recipient Hershel “Woody” Williams, who devoted his life to service.  Woody knew nothing of the Marines. Standing 5-foot-6, when he tried to enlist in 1942, he was told he was too short for service. After the height regulations were changed in early 1943, he successfully enlisted in the United States Marine Corp. Little did Woody know, the PATH THAT CHOICE WOULD TAKE HIM ON.

He was awarded the MEDAL OF HONOR, the U S military’s highest decoration for valor, heroism above and beyond the call of duty, during the Battle of Iwo Jima in WW II. Woody was committed, loyal and above all else BRAVE.  Woody had the attributes of the American Hero.

Among many throughout the United States, a new Gold Star Families Memorial Monument (GSFMM) honoring the families of servicemen and women who sacrificed their lives while serving in the military, was dedicated in Sugar Land TX.

As a part of this inaugural event, three honorees were presented with the 2023 Legacy of Service Award. Additionally, there was the passing of the Woody Williams Foundation flag by 13 devoted volunteers which symbolized our commitment to carrying on Woody’s legacy. Hershel “Woody” Williams devoted his life to honoring and serving Gold Star Families. He left us with clear orders to carry on his legacy of service.

The event provided an opportunity for Gold Star Family members, Medal of Honor recipients, and mission supporters to come together in honor of the legacy of service.

HAROLD and Casey’s parents were honored to be guests at the dedication and Casey’s mom spoke, reflecting on what the monument meant to the family, as well as sharing some highlights of Casey’s military contributions.   She also was privileged to participate in the selection of one of the four panels etched on one side of the monument.   She appropriately selected the SACRIFICE panel.

Harold leisurely enjoyed watching the festivities and received lots of extra attention.
